If anyone has ever thought the Amberley Country Estate Logo is reminiscent of something, the top part of the Logo actually represents Mount Grey/Maukatere. Mount Grey is 934 metres (3,064 ft) high and is 15 kilometres west of Amberley. It is named after Sir George Grey, NZ's governor and Premier between 1845 and 1879. The Maori name, Maukatere, means "floating mountain", as they believed spirits of the dead left from the summit on the long journey to Cape Reinga. I took this photo while visiting a prospective Village Resident on the outskirts of Amberley.
